PERSONALITY: Compared to his adopted brother, Wei Wuxian, Jiang Cheng has always been strict and arrogant. As the son of a sect leader, he's had a lot of expectations upon his shoulders that one day he would have to follow his father. His mother taught him the importance of his position. He is loyal to his clan above all, he lets his pride and the opinion of others trump what he feels is right. Jiang Cheng is arrogant to lesser cultivators such as to Meng Yao who is the bastard son of the head of the Jin Sect. When he was younger, Jiang Cheng was very protective of his older sister, Jiang Yanli, and Wei Wuxian and would do anything for them. Though he felt as if he was competing with Wei Wuxian for his father's love and approval, their relationship was still close growing up and they were like brothers. The two of them would get in trouble together such as the time when they got drunk while studying at the Cloud Recesses. He has an inferiority complex and is always trying to not be a disappointment to his parents and to his clan. Despite being the son of the clan leader, it seemed Wei Wuxian was the favorite and so he tried harder to get the same approval from his father. However, this didn't strain his relationship with his adopted brother and the two were close growing up.

He's a bit of a romantic at heart. He's shown to be sweet to Wen Qing and goes out of his way to help her whenever he can. He also believed in not forcing his sister to marry someone she didn't want to even when he was a clan leader. He would never put her into that position. At the same time, he respected her decision to eventually get married.

His temper is described as frightening and many people avoid him when he's angry. He has a short temper and lashes out when angry, especially if they do anything to his older sister or Wei Wuxian. He continued to lash out even when he was older, showing little actual affection to his nephew, Jin Ling, and instead is strict with him since he wants Jin Ling to live up to his potential. When on a hunt at Dafan Mountain Jiang Cheng scolds Jin Ling for his behavior he holds up to a higher standard.

However, after the death of his parents and the entire sect and the death of his sister, he grew to hate Wei Wuxian. He vowed to get his revenge, feeling nothing but pure hatred against his former brother. When Wei Wuxian was hanging from a cliff, Jiang Cheng caused him to fall after lashing out in anger after his sister died to save Wei Wuxian.

After Wei Wuxian's death, he hunted down anyone who was suspected of demonic cultivation and they often didn't return. However, there was a part of him who still loved his brother though he could never forgive him for his part in his sister's death and for making Jin Ling an orphan. Deep down, there was a part of who would always love Wei Wuxian. He even kept his flute after his death. In the future, after the events of Dafan Mountain, when he finds out that Wei Wuxian gave up his own golden core to him, the hatred lessens though he can never fully let go of it.


POWER:

1. Zidian: an heirloom in the form of a serpent wristband that can be used as an energy whip with purple lightning. It can be used as a whip or to bind someone. It can also separate a soul from the body which is useful in cases of possession It can only be used by him or someone he gave permission to use it, it won't work for anyone else.

2. Golden Core Cultivation (use of spirt energy): he can use the spiritual energy of his golden core to contain, purify, and banish spirits. He does this through incantations and talismans (in the form of paper with spells written on them).

Other uses:
-jumping great distances- think Chinese-style backflips and dramatic jumping (up to about 2 stories)
-increased healing- he heals from injuries faster than normal people
-sword flying that allows him to balance on the blade of his sword and fly in the air

3. Suibian: Wei Wuxian's sword. It sealed itself but Jiang Cheng can draw it since he has Wei Wuxian's golden core, unbeknownst to him at this time.

His mood isn't helped by the fact that somehow a bunch of severed tentacles had been dumped on him within moments of him arriving in Heropa and now some are tangled in his long hair. He's scowling at the phone, looking like he's ready to break it.]

[Another tentacle piece is torn from his hair and thrown to the ground with force.]

I don't get the point of being brought here from our own worlds to deal with the problems of this one. I expect I'll be able to return soon.

[The phone shifts and he doesn't look amused, reaching out and slamming it down again with irritation, causing the feed to cut out.]
